Nettle stems are rich in antioxidantsSignsAndImages/nettle02.jpg

The content of antioxidant polyphenols was measured in nettle leaves and stems. The main part of polyphenols in leaves was chlorogeneic acid (71%). And the stems contained many flavonoids (up to 50%) and anticyanides (28%). Both flavonoids and cyanides are strong antioxidants, capable to prevent premature aging due to UV-radiation. They also reduce inflammation and stimulate collagen synthesis. Accordingly, just nettle stems, but not leaves contain most of all biologically active antioxidants, having anti-aging activity.
