Is it worth licking the wounds
It is common knowledge that oral mucosal
wounds heal faster than cutaneous wounds moreover with lower risk for scar formation. One of the key factors influencing the
phenomenon is the salivary gland secretion. Firstly, saliva creates a humid environment where the cells responsible for healing
process can move easily allowing the exchange of signaling molecules. Secondly, saliva is rich in growth factors and enzymes
able to enhance the active recovery process.
Particularly saliva contains epidermal growth factor, trypsin and
elastase inhibitors and histidine-rich proteins – main healing components influential in stimulating the process of
cell migration and reproduction. Modern scientists are working on the development of next generation synthetic analogs of
human saliva able to increase the speed of wound healing.
